Hands down you need to implement a strong endpoint security solution. I will say that while there have been quite a lot of improvements to Windows Defender and they have undoubtedly seen their 3rd party testing scores increase, it is still not sufficient enough to protect endpoints. But I really don't think it should be your "one stop shop" for protection. I can't deny that Defender has come a long way and does a pretty decent job. Regarding home usage, my wife and I both have Sophos Home installed and like it for its cloud management, hands-off protection, and notifications-plus it is free. You can get very granular with the policy configuration, which is a huge plus for me, and their support is great to boot. Our point-of-sale (POS) terminals run Webroot, as this vendor supports Windows Embedded it, too, is a great product. A bit on the pricey side, but the functionality is all there and it has fantastic reporting.

We use Sophos Sophos as one layer of our protection for workstations and servers and love it. It also has no central reporting so it is difficult to check the status of devices on your network without going to each PC individually-unless you figure out a powershell script to pull that information, if there is one. Defender is a good product and does a fine job with most stuff, but it is particularly weak with behavioral monitoring and malware protection. Anyone who says that Defender is perfectly enough today clearly hasn't had an end user (or themselves) catch some ransomware at any point.
